Data Roaming: What is it, and How Does it Look Post-Brexit?

There’s been some exciting news this week regarding data roaming charges in the EU for O2 customers.

Virgin Media O2 made an exciting announcement regarding data roaming charges in the EU. Let’s take a look at what that means for your business.

But First…

What is Data Roaming

Data roaming is when you use your mobile phone abroad and in so doing, it uses mobile network data in that country.

Every time you connect to the internet, to check your email, Facebook account or to use Google Maps for example, you’re using data.

What has Brexit Got to do with it?

In June 2017, EU free roaming rules were introduced which meant that travellers could use their mobile phones abroad as they could in the UK. Mobile telecom providers were banned from levying additional roaming charges in the EU.  However, as the UK left the European Union, the free roaming rules no longer apply to us.

Since 1 January 2021, the guarantee of free roaming for UK mobile users in 47 destinations in the EU, plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, has ended. Now, instead of being able to ‘roam like you’re at home’ (use your minutes, text and data as if you’re in the UK) it’s up to the individual phone operators to decide what they’ll charge for cross-border calls and data usage.

What’s So Special about O2?

Virgin Media O2 (10 January 2022) announced it will not be reintroducing roaming fees in Europe, making it the only big four mobile network in the UK not to bring back these charges.

Both business and consumer customers will maintain their inclusive roaming in Europe Zones, so they can travel to destinations all over Europe and use their data, calls and texts just as they would in the UK.

It means customers travelling to Europe will be able to use their mobile data and make calls and texts on the same deal as they have in the UK.

Other providers, such as Vodafone, EE and Three are set to reintroduce roaming fees this year for customers travelling to Europe.

This means that customers of O2 can roam like home once again! And that includes our business customers. So, if your business spends time in Europe (well, even if you don’t), get in touch with one of our business specialists to get set up today.
